EVENT DETAILS

2-3PM Artist Talk

3-4:30PM Summer social

Join WBEZ and EarlyWork for an end-of-summer social & studio visit with Jacqueline Surdell at Secrist | Beach!

Jacqueline is an up-and-coming artist who employs rope and various industrial materials to explore the histories of painting. Guests will have the opportunity to gain insight into the artist's creative process as she prepares for her solo exhibition set to open at Secrist | Beach in September.

We invite you to first immerse yourself in Jacqueline’s artistic universe with a laid-back artist chat, followed by a wander through the artist’s pop-up studio at Secrist | Beach, where she's been creating the work for her exhibition on site at the gallery.

Afterward, we’ll keep the fun going as we relish the final moments of summer with refreshing cocktails, a laid-back DJ set, and other fun activations!

About Jacqueline Surdell

Jacqueline Surdell, raised in Chicago, draws inspiration from her family's history in industry and art. Her Polish grandfather's work in steel mills and her Dutch grandmother's landscape painting shaped her view of the relationship between labor and creativity. Surdell's experiences as a competitive athlete influence her disciplined approach to her studio practice, where she creates wall sculptures using industrial rope on large looms. Her technique blends meticulous craftsmanship with the spontaneity of contemporary painting, challenging the boundaries between painting and sculpture. Through her work, she explores themes of labor, history, and the interplay of masculine and feminine constructs, highlighting the nuanced connections between body, environment, and art.
